Biography
Ranjit K. Cheriyan, MBBS, MD, is a board-certified nephrologist. He earned his medical degree from Sri Krishna Medical College; completed residency training in internal medicine at Georgetown University; and completed fellowship training in nephrology at Georgetown University.
At Virginia Nephrology Group Fairfax, Dr. Cheriyan provides comprehensive care for patients with kidney disease, with a strong focus on hypertension, chronic hypertensive and diabetic kidney disease, acute kidney failure, and peritoneal dialysis. He also serves in teaching residents and mentoring high school students.
Dr. Cheriyan’s care philosophy is grounded in collaboration and communication: “Medicine is an art and modern medicine has forgotten this. The most important aspect of taking care of one’s patients is talking with them about the problems and allay their fears and not to rush in the end the patient and the doctor are a team in.”
He is fluent in Malayalam, Bengali, and Hindi and is an active member of the American College of Physicians and the Arlington County Medical Society, where he served as President and started a college scholarship program for low-income students. He has been recognized as a Washington Top Doctor, one of the Best Doctors in America, a Super Doctor, and received the Top Preceptor (teacher) ACP Virginia chapter award in 2013. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with family, singing, and playing tennis.
