Biography
Renuka Sothinathan, MD, MHS, MRCPI, is a board-certified nephrologist. She earned her medical degree from Trinity College Dublin; completed residency training in internal medicine at Georgetown University; and completed fellowship training in nephrology at Johns Hopkins University.
At Virginia Nephrology Group, Dr. Sothinathan provides comprehensive care for patients with kidney disease, with a strong focus on glomerulonephritis, hypertension, and general nephrology. Her special areas of focus include kidney disease and pregnancy and kidney stones. She also serves as Principal Investigator, Medical Director, and Vice President of Medical Staff at Virginia Hospital Center. Dr. Sothinathan has published articles on the treatment of IgA nephropathy, treatment of anemia in kidney disease, hypertension and progression of kidney disease.
Dr. Sothinathan’s care philosophy is grounded in empathy: “Giving each patient the same exemplary care I would expect for my own mother.”
She is fluent in Spanish and Malay (Bahasa Malaysia/Indonesia) and is an active member of the Arlington Medical Society and the American Society of Nephrology. Dr. Sothinathan has been recognized as a Washington Top Doctor and Northern Virginia Top Doctor for multiple consecutive years. Outside of medicine, she enjoys hiking with her family.
